The symbolism of a traditional Korean wedding celebrates the love that every member of the family shares—both with each other and the couple. It also illustrates the broader picture of two families intertwining, leaving the couple a rich foundation to start their own fresh chapter in the context of the greater story.
It’s our pleasure to guide you through your wedding day, incorporating key moments of culturally-rich celebration, such as the paebaek and the hapgeunrye. Our experts are here to perfect every detail, leaving you with nothing but a picture-perfect wedding day experience.
Typically, your timeline will begin with a “meet up” with your love. After that, you and your partner can get ready together, steal away for some photos across our beautiful estate, and connect with the guests in a pre-ceremony celebration.
The rest is up to you! You might opt for a pre-wedding processional parade, or to set aside time for the gyobaerye and hapgeunrye ceremonial procedures. Or, you might want to keep it short and sweet—incorporating a condensed, Western-inspired timeline with family-focused cultural elements in your own, unique way.
Paebaek (Pyebaek) Ceremony: Intimate Korean unification tradition for family-only after the main wedding ceremony to symbolize the entrance of the bride into her husband’s household. Features Korean historical traditions including formal bowing, a tea ceremony, wisdom on marriage shared by the parents, & the couple catching chestnuts and dates.
Gyobaerye: After the washing of the hands of the couple from two helpers, they face each other and bow. The bowing represents the promise of commitment to each other.
Hapgeunrye: The first variation had the couple drinking from the same shared copper cup, with their assistants passing it back and forth between the couple. The second variation has them drinking from separate halves of a gourd. Using two halves signifies that they each made up one half and only together could they be considered whole, indicating their eternal bond & physically shows the two becoming one.
